Complete guide to using the N-gram Automation Tool
The N-gram Automation Tool is a powerful web application designed specifically for Amazon PPC advertisers to analyze and optimize their search term reports. It automatically extracts N-grams (word combinations) from your search terms and helps you identify keywords that should be negated to improve campaign performance and reduce wasted ad spend.
N-grams are contiguous sequences of words extracted from your search terms. This tool generates three types of N-grams:
Single words extracted from search terms.
Example: From "wireless bluetooth headphones"
Useful for identifying broad irrelevant terms like competitor brand names or completely unrelated products.
Two consecutive words from search terms.
Example: From "wireless bluetooth headphones"
Ideal for finding phrase patterns that indicate poor intent or low-converting combinations.
Three consecutive words from search terms.
Example: From "best wireless bluetooth headphones"
Perfect for identifying specific long-tail phrases that consistently underperform.
In Amazon Seller Central or your advertising console, navigate to Reports > Advertising Reports > Search Term Report. Download the report as a CSV file. Make sure to select an appropriate date range (typically 30-60 days for meaningful data).
On the Dashboard, drag and drop your CSV file onto the upload area, or click "Browse Files" to select it. The tool accepts standard Amazon search term report format with columns for Campaign Name, Search Term, Impressions, Clicks, Spend, Orders, and Sales.
Click the "Process File" button. The tool will automatically:
Download the generated Excel file. Each campaign gets its own sheet with organized sections for Monograms, Bigrams, Trigrams, and Search Terms. Review the metrics to identify poor performers.
In the Excel file, you'll find three reference columns at the end: Monogram, Bigram, and Trigram. Add the N-grams you want to negate to these columns. The NE/NP column will automatically show "NP" (Negative Phrase) for any matching N-grams in the data.
The generated Excel file contains the following structure:
| Sheet | Description |
|---|---|
| Summary | Overview with hyperlinks to all campaign sheets for easy navigation. |
| [Campaign Name] | Individual sheet per campaign with Monogram, Bigram, Trigram, and Search Term sections arranged horizontally. |
| Metric | Description | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| CTR | Click-Through Rate - percentage of impressions that resulted in clicks | (Clicks / Impressions) x 100 |
| CVR | Conversion Rate - percentage of clicks that resulted in orders | (Orders / Clicks) x 100 |
| CPC | Cost Per Click - average amount paid for each click | Spend / Clicks |
| ACOS | Advertising Cost of Sales - percentage of sales spent on advertising | (Spend / Sales) x 100 |
Look for N-grams with these characteristics:
N-grams with significant spend but no conversions. These are clear candidates for negation.
Keywords where you're spending more on ads than you're making in sales. Typically unsustainable.
Search terms that rarely get clicked may indicate poor relevance to your product.
Getting clicks but no conversions suggests the search intent doesn't match your product.
ASINs (starting with "B0") represent product targeting, not keyword targeting. They require different analysis and negation strategies, so they're excluded from N-gram analysis which focuses on search term keywords.
NE = Negative Exact (blocks only the exact search term), NP = Negative Phrase (blocks any search containing that phrase). This tool uses NP to mark keywords for phrase-level negation.
Add keywords you want to negate to the Monogram, Bigram, or Trigram reference columns. Excel formulas automatically check each N-gram against its corresponding reference column and display "NP" if there's a match.
Currently, the tool processes one file at a time. For multiple date ranges, combine your CSV files before uploading, or process them separately and compare using the Archive feature.
